Day 338 – Algodón Egipcio – La Espina del Cardenche
June 12, 2012 by Farhang
The sampling of the traditional vocals of a northern Mexico style called cardenche mixed with electronica: the arrival of a Latin American artist from a generation that embraces the past while looking toward the future.

Day 332 – My Best Friend – Higher Palms
May 5, 2012 by Farhang
From Guardian:
“The veteran music critic, Richard Meltzer, has a phrase that describes heaven rock.” We’re still not sure what he meant (we’re rarely sure what he means), but it feels appropriate an appellation for what My Best Fiend do on their Warp debut In Ghostlike Fading, although not necessarily as a comment on its worth, more as an assessment of its ethos and atmos. It has a celestial quality to it, the corollary, perhaps, of the songs addressing mainman Frederick Coldwell’s ideas about faith, or rather faithlessness.”

Day 331 – Harper Blynn – Busy Hands, Empty Hearts
May 5, 2012 by Farhang
There may be lots of “indie” bands who do a few things right but I can’t remember many who have done so much right in one of their first full-length albums. Tight, jangly guitars? Check. Smart keyboard ambience? Check. Amazing, affecting lyrics? Double-check. HUGE chorus hooks that lodge in your braincase? Take that CHECK to the bank. But even with all these, it’s the small things that dazzle the most: the extra beat here and there, the backing vocal layers in just the right spot, the airtight rhythmic dynamics. There’s a lot to boast about on this album, yet it’s all delivered with unassuming, even-keeled confidence– straight onward and straight upward. “Audioholicmedia”
